It’s ‘cool’ to hate what’s popular?
Editorials April 22nd, 2008
The world is a place filled with various opinions, which on the internet is especially prevalent, it’s just something you’ll come across no matter what website you’re on, including this site. The number of anime that is available out there is absolutely staggering, even more so if you consider the amount of man-hours that animators put into all of it.
Where am I going with this? Well basically I have a strong belief of the old adage “Don’t judge a book by it’s cover”, I believe this applies to anything such as people, other types of media, and so forth. However, why does it seem that many in anime (and by no means am I implying that only the anime community suffers this) seem to ignore this almost entirely?
I’m rather pretty involved with the anime community, nothing special outside of this blog mind you, but as in talking with anime fans. It seems the general consensus is that it’s ‘cool to hate what’s popular’ and because of that, those who feel this way, also feel it’s their duty to impose their beliefs as ‘right/fact’ among others.

An example, Code Geass is an extremely popular anime inside and outside of Japan, I’m not sure what it is myself that makes the series so addicting, but in the past few weeks I’ve met many of these people who don’t follow the old adage. They’ll go as far as stating that Code Geass is “stupid”, or calling it “Code Gayass”, as well as various other insults.
Now, I know I was talking about opinions earlier, but these are NOT opinions. Why? Because a majority of these people never even went as far as watching the first episode of the series, be it the first or second season!
Sorry, but I’m gonna go out on a limb here and call you people ‘not worthy of anime’.
I’ve managed this past week to get one of these people to watch ‘Code Gayass’. The results is, we have a brand new rabid fan of Code Geass. So everyone, rather than spending your time sitting there in ignorance, just check it out and see what all the excitement is about, you might end up…god forbid…liking it.
The point isn’t to go watch Code Geass, but the next time you look at that manga, anime, movie or whatever it is. Is that just because it “looks stupid” or “sounds stupid” shouldn’t stop you. I’ve watched anime in the past where the art style was not my thing, but regardless it ended up having one of the most endearing stories ever.
So don’t cast things aside, and at least give those poor animators/writers who slaved over their work, a chance rather than being ignorant, because after all it’s really an art-form.
